Tijdens het OUTSIDE IN Festival tonen tien beeldende kunstenaars het werk dat ze de afgelopen maanden ontwikkelden tijdens hun residentie bij RADAR.
Voorzien van tijd, ruimte en advies leerden ze elkaar kennen tijdens informele ontmoetingen en boeiende gesprekken. Ondanks hun artistieke diversiteit vinden ze elkaar verrassend harmonieus terug binnen de muren van Kunsthal Mechelen

Between the Bed to the Studio
ADAM LEECH
Adam Leech (San Diego, VS) maakt werk dat wordt gedreven door een fascinatie voor de menselijke geest, waarbij hij zich verdiept in vormen van bewustzijn en hoe deze ervaringen, emoties en relaties vormgeven. Zijn recente praktijk bouwt voort op zijn residentie en tentoonstelling in S.M.A.K. (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Gent, België), waar hij de esthetiek van de geest onderzocht en putte uit de ambiguïteiten tussen wetenschappelijk onderzoek en sociale analyse.
​
Voor RADAR en Kunsthal Mechelen presenteert Leech Between the Bed to the Studio, een project dat de dagelijkse — en nachtelijke — routine van de kunstenaar onderzoekt. Het werk volgt een protagonist die beweegt tussen slaap (en dromen) en de fysieke arbeid van studiowerk, waarbij de wisselwerking tussen deze toestanden wordt belicht. Door een poëtische lens onthult Leech hoe deze domeinen elkaar doordringen en informeren, en zo een cyclisch ritme van creatie en introspectie weerspiegelen.

Naast Between the Bed to the Studio zal Leech een reeks schilderijen tentoonstellen die naar binnen kijken, op zoek naar de ongrijpbare vormen van ons innerlijke zelf. Deze werken navigeren door de complexiteiten en lagen van identiteit, waarbij intuïtie, dromerige toestanden en de tastbare eisen van materieel werk worden gecombineerd om een intrigerende dialoog te creëren tussen het onderbewuste en het fysieke.

anyuta wiazemskY snauwaert
Anyuta Wiazemsky Snauwaert is een multidisciplinaire kunstenaar die werkt op het snijvlak van beeldende kunst, theater, wandelingen en participatieve projecten. Intimiteit staat centraal in hun praktijk: door persoonlijke ervaringen te delen, diep in hun eigen psyche te duiken of een gevoel van nabijheid te creëren in hun werken, onderzoeken ze de grenzen en mogelijkheden van wat intiem kan zijn. Hun inspiratie komt voort uit kunstenaars zoals Cindy Sherman, Tracey Emin, Sophie Calle en Martha Rosler.
​
Een belangrijk onderdeel van hun praktijk is samenwerking. Samen met hun levenspartner, Kim Snauwaert, creëren ze werk onder de naam verBELGingsfeest, waarbij sociale betrokkenheid, empathie en generositeit de kern vormen. Hun projecten overstijgen vaak traditionele disciplines en beogen een diepgaande dialoog met het publiek.
​
Met opleidingen in sociologie (MSc, Universiteit Gent, 2024), beeldende kunst (MFA, Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Gent, 2017) en rechten (LLM, Moscow State Law Academy, 2011), verenigt hun achtergrond verschillende perspectieven die hun artistieke praktijk voeden.
Hun werk is gepresenteerd in België, Nederland, Rusland en India en omvat installaties, performances, participatieve projecten en lezingen.

Momenteel werken ze aan verBELGingsfeest, een project dat nieuwe Belgen welkom heet in een ceremonie die de kloof tussen ‘oude’ en ‘nieuwe’ Belgen wil overbruggen. Dit project benadrukt gedeelde toekomstperspectieven en het belang van samenhorigheid in een diverse samenleving. Het project wordt ondersteund door residenties bij onder meer KAAP, workspacebrussels en CAMPO, en zal in 2025 zijn première beleven in Oostende.

Ine kools
In mijn werk ben ik voornamelijk geïnspireerd door de steeds veranderende aard van stedelijke landschappen en de relatie tussen de mens en ruimte. Alsook industriële materialen, hun textuur, de manier hoe ze licht reflecteren, afstoten en doorlaten. Daarnaast probeer ik de rol van de bezoeker in relatie tot kunst in vraag te stellen en deze mogelijkheden te herinterpreteren.
​
Dit vertaal ik in interactieve installaties of sculpturen. In de installaties ben ik geïnteresseerd een omgeving te creëren die bezoekers doet nadenken over hun eigen ruimtelijk inschattingsvermogen en keuzes. Het werk neemt doorgaans vorm als een architecturale structuur die inspeelt op de bewegingschoreografie en perceptie van de bezoeker.
Ine Kools studeerde beeldhouwen aan de Koninklijke Academie Voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen en maakt deel uit van het kunstenaarscollectief en atelier FAAR (For Artists And Residents) in Borgerhout.

Tenderness of the stones
Kaori Ishiguro
Kaori Ishiguro (°1991, Japan) is a creator and performer based in Antwerp.
She studied dance at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where she graduated in 2019.
​
Her work approaches creation in a multidisciplinary manner, delving into the intimate boundaries between herself and others. Her work examines these connections through both physical and sensory experiences.
Kaori is dedicated to breaking down the boundary between spectators and performers, not through obvious interactive means, but by fostering a shared experience of being present in the same moment. She believes in the importance of recognizing our collective presence in the ‘here and now,’ aiming to create immersive works that make the audience gradually aware of their interconnectedness. By observing others, the audience is invited to acknowledge themselves.
​
Her first choreographic project, HACHOÌ„, created in collaboration with musician Anton Lambert, was performed at the Dansand! festival in 2021. Tenderness of the Stones is her second project.

Appelen uit Mechelen
Masha wysocka
Masha Wysocka (b.1984) is a Belgian-Spanish artist who uses photography, performance, research, sound, and writing. She delves into stories from the peripheries and brings history and science to the forefront of her practice.
The project ‘Appelen uit Mechelen’ aims to combat antisemitism. Its title is inspired by the first sentence in the Assimil textbook (L'anglais sans peine), written by Alphonse Chérel in 1929. This title highlights the socio-economic stereotypes often associated with the Jewish community and seeks to challenge these misconceptions through research and art. In addition to working with the archives of Kazerne Dossin (Mechelen) and the Jewish Museum of Belgium (Brussels), Masha Wysocka is eager to incorporate various mediums into her project, especially textiles. This choice emphasises the historical connection of Ashkenazi Jews to the textile industry.

Michiel Van Wambeke (1998) is een beeldend kunstenaar met een focus op audiovisueel werk. In zijn werk onderzoekt hij de spanning tussen feit en fictie in beelden: waar komen ze vandaan en wie bepaalt hun betekenis?

Michiel is gefascineerd door de gemanipuleerde beelden die het internet overspoelen. Hij verkent digitale ruimtes en confronteert deze met fysieke, offline ruimtes, waardoor hun betekenis verschuift en de spanning tussen het publieke en het private wordt blootgelegd. Door te spelen met beeld, context en ruimte creëert hij nieuwe werken die niet alleen visueel prikkelen, maar ook filosofische en maatschappelijke vragen oproepen.

I’m Naama Shoshana Fogiel Lewin, a political movement artist born in 1996 in Israel/occupied Palestine, continuously searching for ways to find hope in a burning world. I started my formal dance education when I was four years old and ever since I have been involved in different disciplines, mixing diverse movement practices. In 2023, I graduated with a choreography and performance master's at ISAC (Institut Supérieur des Arts et des Choreographies). For the past six years, I have been living in Europe, collaborating with several artists from different generations, cultures, and professional domains. I have been working as a choreographer, performer, dancer, curator, dramaturge, and movement mentor.
My work is profoundly political from its base, aiming to deconstruct systemic power relations with compassion through the poetic potential of movement. I combine physical, performative, and vocal practices with writing and cartography practices, and theory research, investigating the intersections of land, national identities, bureaucracy, and borders, exploring how they manifest within the human body and contribute to various pathologies. I look at art as the space to reflect, think, and react to reality through emotional intimacy.
During my residency at Radar, I continued the work of To Break Up With I', a project that was born from my thesis and now is being transformed into a multidisciplinary practice. To Break Up With I’ takes the form of a breakup letter/ceremony to a loved one attempting to deconstruct the contemporary Zionist identity my generation was educated in. By embodying this nationalist notion of the personalization of a state, I seek to dismantle it and expose the violence inherent in nationalism, ultimately breaking up with the "I" that Israel has constructed within me and finding ways for resistance.
The performances, research, and creations combine writing, reading, plasticity exploration of papers, somatic practices of deconstruction of the body and voice work around alarm sounds and other archival sounds that exist in the traumatized body. The performance aims to navigate the realms of imagination, reality, politics, and intimacy, arriving at an honest, sensitive denomination of memories with a wish to trace the process of transition of identity and to find another Jewish voice that asks for Free Palestine and Peace.
For the Outside In festival, this project and with it the totality of my artistic practice have been expanding. Next to the performance, I am creating an installation that will invite the public to take part in the artistic research of To Break Up With I', dive into this work’s universe, and create space for reflection and deeper discourse around national identities and their effect on our emotional and physical realities.

Thomas van Walle (1984) is a contemporary artist from Antwerp. He is known for compositions of orchestrated chaos. He is interested in the different ranges of beauty. When is something beautiful and
when does something become ugly ?
Is there such a thing as ugliness within beauty?

His works start frequently from the subconscious and then enter into a dialogue with reality. Afterwards, reflections are
used to look at where the work is taking itself.
​
For his expo ‘ Mind Games ‘ as part of the Outside In Festival, he was interested in the intertextuality between new and existing works. How to make a nice composition between those works ? Older works
have been reinterpreted and rearranged. Different media have been used; such as graphics, drawings, painting, collage, assemblages and sculpture. The title ‘ Mind Games ‘ reflects what a good work of art for
the artist should look like: on the one hand, elicited from the mind, from the subconscious; on the other hand, fresh and playful enough: like a mind game. It’ s nice, when the works together breathe. It also refers
to the song ‘ Mind Games ‘ by John Lennon:
loving interactions in a difficult world are always good !

Concerning the materials a mix from old and new techniques are being used. He loves to play with different kinds of texture, like cultband Sonic Youth does in their music. A challenging use of color, especially a fascination for the color purple, is present. The works are often accompanied by slightly humorous titles. These titles often enter into dialogue with existing works within the art world, but also have the aim to get you into another world, a world aside, a world on its own.
​
In addition to creating visual work, Thomas van Walle also operates as a composer and musician in contemporary music theaters and dance performances. He is often asked as a performer because of his natural, pure way of performing. He has already toured at home and abroad.
​
Thomas van Walle obtained his master's degree in architecture at Sint-Lucas Ghent. He has won the BOZAR composition prize. in Mechelen. He believes in the connection between people through art.

Violeta Chouciño Veiga
Violeta Chouciño Veiga (A Coruña, 1999) is a multimedia visual artist that works on nostalgia, identity and culture.
She often uses archives as a methodology, resulting in photography, artist book, and installation projects. Storytelling and anecdotes are key in her oeuvre, inspired mainly by her homeland Galiza and the sociopolitical causes it endures, and shown lately in Agrupación Cultural Alexandre Bóveda (A Coruña) or Arttelex (Antwerpen).
After graduating in Fine Arts in Pontevedra (UVigo) in 2021, Violeta graduates in the Master of Visual Arts at Sint Lucas Antwerpen in 2023, staying afterwards and making Antwerpen her current base.
Violeta is also a photographer, podcast host,
and most recently a dj and a cook.

Wouter Vanderstede
Wouter Vanderstede maakt in situ installaties, vertrekkend vanuit de eigenheid van de plek en de sociaal-ruimtelijke context.
Hij speelt in op slijt- en gebruikssporen van een ruimte en gebruikt zo veel mogelijk materialen van ter plaatse. Hij bouwt installaties met gevonden voorwerpen of combineert objecten met archieffoto’s.
De ruimte, de materialen, de mensen en de geschiedenis van de plek vormen telkens de inspiratie. Het gros van zijn installaties maakt hij samen met zijn vaste compagnon Peter Simon. Sinds Kunstenfestival Watou verleggen zij hun werkterrein naar de publieke ruimte, vanuit een meer conceptuele benadering.
Tijdens de RADAR-residentie gaat Wouter verder op dat spoor.
Maar hij focust op zijn oorspronkelijke inspiratie: het speels kijken en manipuleren van de wereld. De bovenkant van een parkeergebouw in Mechelen wordt dan een canvas voor poëtische of
absurde krijttekeningen en interventies.
​
Iedereen mag meespelen: de vlekken op grond, de belijning, de groene en gebouwde omgeving, kleinde vondsten, de lucht, de mensen.
Ook in RADAR wordt er getimmerd, gebouwd en gespeeld met klein en groot materiaal, klei en letters, gevonden objecten…
Op Outside In toont hij het resultaat van deze ‘air de jeu’.
